Throughout my teaching career it was obvious to me that children were only successful at school if they learnt to read well. I am thrilled to see that heads who make this their core purpose are now being recognised by OFSTED in the Reading by Six report.
My passion to get children reading is now at the heart of Read Write Inc. Its carefully constructed teaching programme, alongside carefully matched resources and books, provides a lively, structured, and above all, rigorous approach to the teaching of phonics - and literacy as a whole.
After over twenty years as a head and a teacher trainer, one thing stands out – that the consistent teaching of literacy is dependent upon excellent training for all the staff: the head, teachers, TAs – and preferably all at the same time.
This means having fabulous trainers who are able to show you, hands-on, the best way to teach children to read. Trainers who are able to model lessons, coach teachers and work one-to-one with challenging children - to make sure things move quickly after the training – with pace, energy and passion!
When every teacher is able to teach reading confidently, then every child learns to read fluently – including older children who have already slipped through the net and those with specific needs.
All our trainers have been, or are, excellent classroom teachers and expert in teaching the Read Write Inc. programmes. This means they have a full understanding of how children learn to read and write, and all the potential problems that might stand in the way of a child learning to read – whatever their circumstances.
Our trainers use the same explicit teaching techniques and strategies that teachers will go on to use with their children. They are simple but so effective…we teach the children using expansive modelling of very specific learning. The children then practise the same thing with a partner while we assess their progress and decide if further teaching is needed, or whether to move on to the next part of the lesson.
It’s the combination of having both the knowledge about the teaching of reading and writing and excellent teaching skills that make our trainers so effective, and this knowledge and set of skills is what is given to your staff at the two-day training.
We also provide continuing back up support and professional development training which we can tailor explicitly to your children’s needs and circumstances, to ensure that all your children learn to read and write successfully.
